San Jose State Museum of Art and Design Competition
ERW Design's proposal for a new art museum at San Jose State combines three strategies. The museum forms the fourth wall of the art school precinct. New exhibition spaces on an irregularly shaped top floor cantilever over the existing school buildings. An over sized 'media window,' at the cantilever's larger end, reveals both art installations and iconographic imagery, uniting
the precinct to the larger campus.
Street-level galleries are sited along the student mall. A café and additional amenities are sited in the newly landscaped inner court.
Facing the street, the building is clad in panels of pre-cast concrete and glass. In contrast there is wood paneling on the courtyard elevation and the visible areas of the museum's underside. |
