Palisades Glacier Mountain Hut

This proposal is for a base camp in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, and was designed as a prototype for multiple National Park Service sites.
The buildings and site design were developed to capture the spirit of wilderness camping, by providing encampment and shelter in an elemental way. Each building form contains a distinct function, providing the essentials for eating, sleeping, and bathing.
Roofs and building forms are both expressive and of the landscape. Long roof overhangs provide shelter and shade. Sod roofs are tied to the landscape and are also usable green surfaces.
Thick walls are made of local stone and wood planks are stacked to form interior walls. Glass walls provide contrasting texture, views, and needed solar gain. The building was designed with sustainable mechanical systems and building materials, and in consideration of a precious natural resource: the wilderness.
