The Children's Center at Caltech
ERW Design was commissioned to develop a master plan for the Children's Center at Caltech, a preschool child-care facility serving Caltech and its neighbors. A key concept was the preservation of the protected but open outdoor space, which enabled free movement and visual access.
Different centers were developed on the site: a 'sandy beach,' with running water; a pavilion stage; grassy 'jelly bean' mounds; and a high-density bike path, through the center's wooded area.
At the school's entrance, formal gardens were installed among mature evergreens, and paths, plantings and donor walls were integrated into the overall scheme. |
